Looking for some free money? Ask and you shall receive! Wainwright Bank (of Boston, MA) is offering a free $200 savings bond to new customers who open a Value Checking account with Direct Deposit. You do not have to be a Massachusetts resident to apply, and you can complete your application online.
The skinny: You only need ten dollars for an opening minimum balance, but Wainwright bank requires that you have a $500 minimum balance to avoid a $6 monthly service charge. If you link your account to Direct Deposit, though, the account is “free with no minimum balance required and unlimited check writing.”
They also offer a free debit or ATM card, and free unlimited withdrawals at more than 2,800 SUM ATMs*. Value Checking customers also enjoy free online banking with free bill pay. As a nod to early savers and the more mature, they waive the monthly service charge for customers younger than 19, or age 65 and over.
* What’s a SUM ATM, you ask? Per the SUM Web site, “SUM is a convenient and easy way to avoid surcharge fees. Cardholders of financial institutions who have joined NYCE’s SUM Program can withdraw funds from designated ATMs belonging to other SUM Program members, without a surcharge fee. If your financial institution participates in the SUM Program, just look for other ATMs with the bright yellow and green SUM decals. You can then be sure that you won’t incur a surcharge for accessing your cash.” Or, you can enter your zip code for local-to-you SUM ATMs.
